Dela Coffie, a communications consultant has scrutinised former president John Dramani Mahama’s promise to abolish the Electronic Transaction levy should the NDC grab power in 2025.
Delivering an address under the theme, “Ghana at a Crossroad” on Monday (2 May), Mahama said, “We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the E-Levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering. A new National Democratic Congress government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana in 2025 will repeal the E-Levy Act.
However, Dela Coffie believes Mr Mahama has over the years established himself as a crowd pleaser who only say what people want to hear.
To him, although he hasn’t perceived the smell of the crossroad Ghana is at, the promise to scrap the E-levy is “a ruse to place Mahama in a pole position to lead the NDC to another disastrous outing at the expense of other more competent aspirants.”
“I certainly haven’t noticed the smell of the crossroad but clearly former President John Mahama has seen the signs. He also says the next NDC administration will cancel the E-Levy policy being implemented by the current regime. Fundamentally, the notion of cancelling the E-Levy is actually a good one, or would be if it were sincere. However, it appears this is all a ruse to place Mahama in a pole position to lead the NDC to another disastrous outing at the expense of other more competent aspirants.Well, anybody daft enough to think that Mahama would ever deliver anything which required detailed plans and long term commitment deserves an ass kicking. The man offers nothing other than slogans and blatant boosterism in place of real work and commitment. He is just a crowd pleaser and self publicist who will tell an audience what they wish to hear,” Dela wrote on Facebook.
He urged the NDC to consdier Kwabena Duffuor as flagbearer who he believes stand a beter chance of helping the NDC clinch victory.
“So, instead of the NDC lurching from crisis to crisis with Mahama, let’s elevate Dr Kwabena Duffuor on top of our economic discourse for him to make a compelling case in furtherance of the return of the NDC in 2024 – Duffuor’s clarity on economic policy will restore trust in NDC.”
