Road Tolls Won’t Be Back – Kwaku Kwarteng

Following the Minister for Roads and Highways’ strong remarks, Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng, the Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, has stated that the government will not reintroduce road tolls.

After Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta declared that the road tolls would be eliminated and that the government would introduce an Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) to cover the revenue gap left by the tolls, the Minister canceled them.

Last year, the Finance Minister stated this during his presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy for 2022 on the floor of Parliament.

Following the removal of the road tolls, some have harshly criticized the Roads Minister, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, claiming that his action was hasty.

There have been requests for the government to restore the tolls in some way, but Kwaku Kwarteng, appearing on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo,’ said that “the government will not bring back the tolls.”

He emphasized that “the toll booth that the government has removed is in the right order,” referring to the grounds for eliminating the tolls, which had to do with the traffic condition at the locations where the toll booths were located.
