Evangelist and public speaker Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh has publicly apologized to the University of Ghana (UG) and the general public for recent remarks on HIV prevalence among students, which sparked controversy and backlash.
The apology follows a segment on GTV’s Breakfast Show aired on October 24, 2024, where Rev. Tetteh made statements suggesting that a notable number of UG students were HIV-positive, attributing this to alleged risky behavior on campus. His comments drew widespread criticism, with many accusing him of promoting stigma and misinformation about the university community.
In response, the University of Ghana issued a strong statement underscoring the importance of addressing HIV/AIDS issues based on scientific evidence, warning against the risks of speculative claims. UG emphasized that only scientific testing, rather than anecdotal accounts, can accurately reflect HIV status, and expressed concern over the potential harm of unverified information.
On October 29, Rev. Tetteh issued a formal apology, expressing regret for any distress his comments may have caused. He clarified that his intention was to bring attention to broader societal challenges affecting youth rather than to single out UG students. Rev. Tetteh noted that his statements were informed by his personal experiences counseling young people and reaffirmed his commitment to confidentiality in his work.
