Reject Monstrous E-Levy – PPP To NDC MPs

The opposition Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has expressed its scorn for the proposed Electronic Transactions Levy, which was announced in the Minister of Finance’s 2022 budget announcement on Wednesday, November 17.

“We are opposed to this new tax policy because we feel that the solution to the country’s current economic issues is not the imposition of more taxes to raise income,” the party stated in a statement released by Kofi Asamoah Siaw, its 2020 Vice Presidential Candidate.

According to the report, the government has failed to account to the people over whom it has power.

In a statement, the PPP stated that the Akufo-Addo-led administration needed to manage national revenue prudently.

“We oppose this budget proposal because the government has demonstrated a lack of clear accountability in the management of public finances.”

“What we have is hollow sloganeering like ‘Protecting the Public Purse,’ when the purse is leaking profusely, as the Auditor-General continues to report, or the premeditated set-up of a looting system to disperse public funds to the profit of regime party bureaucrats and appointees.”

It stated that the legislative arm of government’s role is to represent the people’s interests and aspirations, and that Ghanaians are “united” in their opposition to the Levy, also known as the e-levy.

“To this end, we urge all our Members of Parliament, particularly the NDC Minority, to stay steadfast in their defense of Ghana’s people by opposing this insensitive E-levy proposal,” the statement said.

It went on to say that if the e-levy is accepted in any shape or form, it will impede economic activity and growth, “worsening the citizenry’s already dismal and insecure economic and terrible living conditions.”

“Parliament should be aware that they are not alone in their patriotism in opposing the budget for 2022.

“The PPP joins our MPs in Parliament in supporting your efforts to use your parliamentary oversight to reject the 2022 budget, including the E-Levy.”
