Rawlings’ Mother And Family Did Not Want Me To Marry Their Son – Nana Konadu Reveals

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings has revealed that the family of her husband, especially her recently departed mother-in-law did not really agree to her marriage with the NDC founder.

According to the former first lady, the mother of JJ Rawlings strongly opposed their union when she was first introduced to the family in 1976.

Speaking on Sunday Night Live on Asaase Radio, Nana Konadu explained that her husband had to strongly persuade her aunties to intervene with his mother.

“He [Rawlings] had to tell them who I am and the family I come from and if anybody was going to complain then it shouldn’t be them but from her [Konadu] family…and so one of the aunties took us to one other ‘mama gas’ and she agreed to go and do the engagement because he [Rawlings] insisted,” Nana Konadu narrated.

The flagbearer of the NDP also revealed that there were some class expectations from her family as well because of the Asante-Ewe stereotype.

“It was my uncles and aunties who were creating the whirlwind and Opoku Ware at the time said the Ashantis had always had their aliens as Anlos so what’s the big deal, but eventually they were resolved,” she told Nana Yaa Mensah.
