Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure has received a significant boost with the commissioning of three new 40-bed district hospitals by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the Eastern Region.

The newly inaugurated hospitals, located in Adukrom (Okere District), Jumapo (New Juaben North Municipality), and Kwabeng (Atiwa West District), mark a milestone in Ghana’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery. These facilities are part of a broader initiative to construct 12 new hospitals across the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, along with a polyclinic in the Brong Ahafo region.

State-of-the-Art Facilities for Better Healthcare
Equipped with cutting-edge medical technologies, each hospital features an Out-Patient Department, Public Health Department, operating theatre, and residential accommodation for staff. They also boast specialized units, including:

  • An 8-bed Paediatric Ward, Male Ward, and Female Ward
  • A 4-bed Lying-in and 2-bed Recovery room
  • Four Labour Delivery stations
  • A 36-seater waiting room and dedicated ante-natal and counselling spaces

The facilities were built by VAMED Engineering GmbH, an Austrian firm, with funding from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s., at a total project cost of €71.5 million. This budget also covers the provision of 12-unit residential accommodations for hospital staff at each site.

A National Initiative to Bolster Healthcare
The Eastern Region hospitals are part of a series of recent inaugurations, following four others commissioned last month in the Ashanti Region. Located in Drobonso, Sabronum, Twedie, and Suame, these facilities reflect the government’s commitment to equitable access to healthcare services.

Initiated in 2020 under the leadership of former Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu, the project aims to alleviate pressure on existing healthcare facilities and improve medical access for Ghanaians.

Call for Community Support and Sustainability
President Akufo-Addo urged the staff and local communities to ensure the proper administration and maintenance of the hospitals. “These facilities symbolize our dedication to improving healthcare for all residents. It is now up to the communities to take ownership and preserve these vital assets,” he emphasized.

A New Era for Healthcare in Ghana
The newly commissioned hospitals are set to provide quality healthcare services, reducing the strain on existing facilities and bringing much-needed medical care closer to residents. With this initiative, the government continues to affirm its commitment to enhancing the nation’s healthcare system and ensuring a healthier future for all Ghanaians.
