Peace Cannot Be Guaranteed When Concrete Measures Are Not Put In Place – Mahama Supports Asiedu Nketia

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his understanding of the decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman, Asiedu Nketia, to reject signing a peace pact ahead of the 2024 elections. Mahama explained that the chairman’s stance is rooted in the belief that peace cannot be ensured without first addressing justice.

Speaking during a press briefing in the Volta Region, Mahama reflected on past incidents, particularly during the previous election, where lives were lost, and no meaningful actions were taken to bring justice to the victims. He emphasized that these unresolved issues have created doubts about the effectiveness of signing peace agreements.

“I read the statement made by our Chairman [Asiedu Nketia] this morning and even though it is not a decision that we have sat and taken, I can understand the position that he’s coming from,” Mahama stated. He noted that Nketia’s concerns are about the lack of accountability and justice following incidents of violence, which undermines the significance of peace accords.
