A joint investigative committee has uncovered 2,637 unaccounted-for containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)—more than double the initially reported 1,300. The discovery follows an extensive probe involving National Security, the Ministry of Transport, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and Customs.
Where Were the Containers Found?
As of April 30, 2025, the containers were traced to various terminals within Tema Port, with their distribution as follows:
-
Meridian Port Services (MPS): 860 containers
-
GPHA Terminals: 1,237 containers
-
Evacuated by National Security: 272 containers
-
Amaris Terminal: 194 containers
-
ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal: 20 containers
Demurrage Charges and ECG’s Next Steps
Further investigations revealed that 2,437 of the containers had overstayed the 60-day clearance period, accruing significant demurrage fees. ECG is now expected to negotiate with port authorities to settle the outstanding charges.
Chief of Staff Directs Immediate Evacuation
In response to the findings, the Chief of Staff has ordered the immediate evacuation of all located containers to ECG’s secured warehouses, with a full inventory audit to ensure transparency and accountability.
This discovery raises serious concerns about port logistics management and ECG’s oversight, prompting calls for stricter monitoring to prevent future discrepancies. Authorities continue to investigate how such a large number of containers went unaccounted for.
