Our Constitution Is Not The Problem; We Lack The Commitment To Follow The Rules – Prof Azar

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Prof Azar has bemoaned the lack of commitment by the Ghanaian people and politicians to follow the rules of the constitution.

In a Facebook post in reaction to ECOWAS’ demand for immediate return to constitutional rule in Guinea following a coup d’état, he said the problem has nothing to do with the written rules, rather, the lack of will power to abide by these written rules.

According to him every country has an imperfect constitution, noting that the problem with constitutions is that they are easy to write and promulgate but they do not necessarily establish a constitutional order.

“The Ghanafuo [Ghana’s] problem is not that we have an imperfect Constitution. All constitutions are imperfect, hence their amendment architecture.

“The Ghanafuo problem is that we lack the fundamental commitment that is required to establish a constitutional order,” he added. “But it is not just the Constitution. It is any law. We are outstanding at writing, rewriting, changing and commissioning statutes, regulations, [and] ordinances that we have no intention to be bound by or to follow.”
