The Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II has accepted an invitation to attend the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla on Saturday, 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey.

A statement from the Manhyia Palace signed by the Chief of Staff, Kofi Badu confirmed the news.

The Asante monarchy and British monarchy have a complicated history that dates back to the colonial era of Africa. The Asante Kingdom, also known as the Ashanti Empire, was a pre-colonial state located in what is now modern-day Ghana. The British, who were expanding their empire at the time, began to establish trading relations with the Asante in the late 17th century.

Over time, tensions began to rise between the Asante and the British, particularly over issues of trade and territory. In the early 19th century, the Asante launched a series of military campaigns against the British, who responded with their own military expeditions. These conflicts eventually led to the formal annexation of the Asante Kingdom by the British in 1896.

During the colonial period, the Asante monarchy was largely marginalized and relegated to ceremonial roles, while real power was held by the British colonial administration. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the Asante monarchy experienced a resurgence, and has since played an important role in Ghanaian culture and politics.

In more recent years, the relations between the Asante monarchy and the British monarchy have been largely cordial. Members of the British royal family have visited Ghana and met with the Asante king, and the Asante king has also visited the United Kingdom. However, the history of colonialism and the legacy of British imperialism in Africa continues to be a sensitive topic, and the relationship between the two monarchies is sometimes viewed with a degree of suspicion or resentment by some Ghanaians.
