The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that voter turnout in many areas across the country had reached 60 percent as of noon today. According to Benjamin Bano-Bio, the EC’s Director of Electoral Services, the early turnout figures indicate strong participation, and the Commission is optimistic about even higher numbers as the day progresses.
“Majority of voters have turned out to vote at most of the centres. At noon, 30 percent of our centres recorded about 60 percent turnout. Additionally, 40 percent of centres reported turnout between 40 and 50 percent, while the remaining 30 percent saw approximately 30 percent turnout,” Mr. Bano-Bio explained.
He encouraged all eligible voters to head to the polls and exercise their right to vote.
Challenges Addressed, Voting in Progress
Mr. Bano-Bio noted that initial challenges faced by some electoral officers earlier in the morning had been resolved, ensuring that voting was proceeding smoothly by midday. He also emphasized the importance of adherence to electoral guidelines, urging officers to avoid any actions that might undermine the process.
Although there were reports of voting irregularities in Kintampo, located in the Bono East Region, he stated that the election process has been largely peaceful nationwide.
Reminder to Electoral Officers
The Director reminded EC officers across the country to strictly adhere to electoral laws, warning that any violations would result in severe consequences.
“The Commission will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the right thing is done at all levels. Any official who compromises their position will face the full rigours of the law. Officers should, therefore, act professionally,” he cautioned.
Support for Persons with Disabilities
Mr. Bano-Bio highlighted that necessary accommodations have been made to ensure persons with disabilities (PWDs) can vote with ease at all polling stations.
Security Measures in Place
On the issue of security, the Commission confirmed the presence of adequate personnel at all polling stations to handle any security concerns. Additionally, Mr. Bano-Bio commended the political party agents for maintaining decorum throughout the day and encouraged them to continue cooperating as the process unfolds.
The EC remains committed to conducting a transparent and peaceful electoral process and calls on all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring a successful election.
