The Ghana Police Service is expected to today put before a court the convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor for making comments on social media that suggested a coup threat.
Mr. Barker-Vormawor was arrested on February 11 upon his return to the country from the UK.
He has been in police custody for over 48 hours, in breach of the laws on the detention of persons in police custody.
According to members of the #FixTheCountry Movement, their convener has refused to eat or drink three days into his arrest.
The hunger strike is believed to be in protest of the government’s suppression of freedoms.
Earlier, the group had raised concerns about the whereabouts of Oliver Barker-Vormawor after he was picked up by the Police at the Kotoka International Airport last Friday.
But the Police debunked reports that he had gone missing, thereby taking responsibility for his arrest.
Police confirmed that the Cambridge University PhD Student’s arrest was a result of his social media post.
Police have said his “post contained a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent to subvert the constitution of the Republic”.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor made the post after pictures of the E-levy cake at the Majority Leader’s 65th birthday party went viral.
