The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken decisive action against 280 of its members, including Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona West Constituency, following allegations of misconduct. This significant development stems from claims that these individuals supported Ms. Morrison’s decision to contest the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate after losing the party’s internal primaries.
A letter issued by Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the constituency chairman, outlined the party’s position on the matter. The expelled members were officially informed of their dismissal and were notified that they are no longer recognised as members of the NPP. The letter further stated that these individuals are barred from holding any party positions, participating in NPP events, or utilizing the party’s symbols and flag.
“This decision underscores the NPP’s commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring loyalty among its members. By taking this action, the party aims to safeguard its unity and principles as it prepares to rebuild the party.
Ms. Morrison’s independent candidacy reportedly gained the backing of some key figures within the constituency, including certain constituency executives, polling station executives, and ward coordinators. This internal support for her bid is said to have created significant tension within the party’s ranks in Agona West, leading to the party’s loss of the seat.
The NPP’s internal primaries are designed to foster unity and ensure that the party fields a single candidate for each constituency during national elections. However, Ms. Morrison’s decision to contest as an independent candidate after her loss in the primaries is viewed as a breach of party regulations.
The expulsion of Ms. Morrison and her supporters is expected to have a considerable impact on the party’s operations in Agona West.
The NPP leadership has consistently emphasized the importance of party loyalty and adherence to its rules. This latest action serves as a clear message that violations of party regulations will not be tolerated, regardless of the individuals involved.
