NPP Parliamentary Aspirants In Walewale Constituency Reconcile, Strengthening Party Unity Ahead Of 2024 Polls

In a significant turn of events, the two New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirants for the Walewale constituency, Lariba Zuweira Abudu and Dr. Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama, have resolved their long-standing differences. The two politicians, who had been at odds over the party’s parliamentary primary, were seen together in a trending picture, signaling the end of their rivalry.

The reconciliation follows Abudu’s decision to withdraw from the parliamentary race, a move she communicated in a letter to the NPP’s General Secretary. Abudu, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, cited the need for party unity and the greater good as her reasons for stepping down.

The Walewale constituency primary has been marked by intense competition, with allegations of vote-buying, intimidation, and even disruptions that forced a re-run of the election. Abudu’s decision to withdraw has been seen as a sacrifice aimed at fostering peace and unity in the constituency.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the National Executive Committee of the NPP confirmed Dr. Tia Mahama as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming election. The NPP also praised the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service for their swift actions in maintaining order during the contentious primary, which included the arrest of a culprit involved in disrupting the vote count.

The reconciliation between Abudu and Mahama is viewed as a major boost for the NPP, as internal divisions had threatened the party’s cohesion in the constituency. With the aspirants now united, the party is expected to focus its efforts on the upcoming general election, where it faces competition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Regional executives of the NPP have commended both aspirants for their decision to set aside their differences, expressing optimism that this unity will strengthen the party’s chances in the 2024 elections.
