The New Patriotic Party is likely to initiate steps to contest the election of Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament after the election of NDC MP for Assin North, Joseph Gyaakye Quayson was annulled by the Cape Coast High Court.
The NPP, on the dawn of January 7 when the 8th parliament of the 4th Republic was being ushered in, conceded the speakership of the house to the NDC’s Alban Bagbin under acrimonious circumstances.
The NPP had failed to get their preferred candidate, Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye elected as speaker following a heated election that saw the military called into the chamber to restore order.
Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah has since insisted that his caucus decided to concede the speakership to Mr. Bagbin in order to foster peace in the house.
However, now that the NDC is one seat short in parliament, and with NDC MP for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo Toffey also likely to lose her seat due to the same circumstances, it is increasingly becoming likely that the NPP caucus in parliament might attempt to aim for the seat of the Speaker.
The coming days will be very interesting indeed.
