A group calling itself Concerned Northern Grassroots of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu to resign from his position as Majority Leader in Parliament following a comment he made.
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs had suggested that the NPP elects a flagbearer who is non-Akan to lead them into election 2024 because it had had two Akan leaders in John Agyekum Kufour and President Akufo-Addo.
However, the group in a press conference disagreed with the position of the Majority leader saying “This, we find very worrying because all sophisticated politicians, party members and citizens know very well that a lot of variables play in a dynamic political marketing context to determine the most favourable candidate to win an election.”
The group said: “Of course, we are not the least oblivious to his vice-presidential aspirations and what he seeks to selfishly achieve even at the expense of the party’s collective interest”, adding: “That is why we need to call him to order before he does the party more harm than he had already done it in Parliament”.
“Is there any constitutional instrument either from the nation or party constitution which states that our party leadership should be based on ethnicity,” the group said, wondering: “Is he above the directive given by the party?”
“If he is not above those directives by the National Executive Committee of which he is a member, then he should resign as our leader of the August house for showing bad fate and setting a very bad precedence.”
