NPP Flagbearership Race: Dr. Bawumia In Commanding Lead In Latest Survey
A recent survey conducted by the Centre for Sustainable African Development Initiatives (C-SADI) in the UK and The Outcomes International in Ghana has shed light on the current state of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race. The survey, which included insights from the Super Delegates Conference, suggests that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is maintaining a substantial lead, positioning him as the favorite to secure the NPP’s nomination for the 2024 General Elections.
Despite a formidable campaign effort by Maverick Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, the survey projects that he will secure only 10.4% of the votes, highlighting the strength of Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy. Other aspirants, including Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Hon. Francis Addai-Nimoh, are projected to have smaller percentages of support, with 7.3% of delegates still undecided.
The Super Delegates Conference had its share of surprises, with Kennedy Agyapong causing a major upset by coming second behind Dr. Bawumia, securing 14.30% of the votes. This result was unexpected, as Alan Kyeremanten had been initially tipped to come second. The new survey reinforces Dr. Bawumia’s position as the frontrunner in the race.
The report identifies Dr. Bawumia’s vision for the party and the country, his demonstrated competence, and his perceived ability to secure victory in the 2024 presidential election as key factors contributing to his strong support among delegates.
Delegates appear to be assessing candidates primarily based on their vision for the party and the nation, as well as their overall competence. There’s a belief that the NPP’s chances of success in the 2024 elections will be bolstered if the government’s performance is improved and party unity is maintained following the primaries.
The stage is set for a pivotal moment in the NPP’s history as, on November 4, 2023, more than 200,000 delegates will cast their votes to elect the party’s presidential candidate (flagbearer) for the 2024 General Elections. While the competition remains fierce, all indications from various polls so far suggest that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the leading contender.
The NPP flagbearership race continues to be a subject of great interest and anticipation as the party approaches the crucial 2024 elections.
