The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale Constituency of the North East Region is grappling with deepening internal challenges, following a series of recent developments that have exacerbated existing tensions within the party.
Just 72 hours after a court ordered a re-run of the Parliamentary Primary in the constituency, the NPP’s North East Regional Chairman, Fuseini Nurudeen, announced the suspension of two constituency executives and a party member. The suspension, effective immediately, was communicated in a statement dated September 3, 2024, and signed by the Regional Chairman.
The affected individuals include Alhassan Sulemana, the Walewale Constituency Second Vice Chairman, Imoro Tonzun Mahamudu, the Walewale Constituency Financial Secretary, and Megida Saaka Sanusi, a party member. The statement cited violations of the NPP constitution as the basis for their suspension, specifically referencing Article 4, Clause 7(la), (e), (f), and (g).
The letter detailing their suspension highlighted several key reasons for the action taken:
- Violation of Duties as Members: The suspended individuals were accused of failing to fulfill their responsibilities as outlined in the party’s constitution.
- Breach of Duty to Uphold Party Policies Publicly: The executives and the member were alleged to have publicly acted contrary to the party’s policies.
- Creation of Discord or Factionalism: The statement accused them of actions that have contributed to divisions within the party, undermining its unity.
- Bringing the Party into Disrepute: The suspended members were also charged with engaging in behavior that has tarnished the party’s image and subjected it to public ridicule.
During their suspension, the affected individuals are prohibited from participating in any political activities, including attending party meetings, making decisions on behalf of the party, or representing the party in any official capacity. They are also required to hand over all party property to the constituency chairman.
The suspension will remain in effect pending further investigation and deliberation by the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee. The party leadership has emphasized that this action is part of an ongoing effort to restore order and integrity within the Walewale Constituency.
These developments come at a critical time for the NPP, as the party navigates the fallout from the court ruling and works to prepare for the upcoming re-run of the Parliamentary Primary. The situation in Walewale reflects broader challenges the NPP may face in maintaining unity and discipline within its ranks as the 2024 elections approach.
The NPP’s leadership has yet to comment further on the matter, but the suspensions signal a decisive step in addressing internal conflicts that could impact the party’s electoral prospects in the constituency and beyond.
