No Law Bars Chiefs From Doing Politics – Dormaahene

According to Osagyeafo Nana Agyemang Badu, the Dormaahene, while traditional rulers are prohibited from actively participating in party politics, there is no law that forbids them from supporting their native citizens who are running for office.

He claims that chiefs can publicly express their support for their royals and good luck to them in elections.

“There is no law that prohibits chiefs from engaging in politics. It states that chiefs cannot actively engage in party politics. It implies that a chief cannot run for office and solicit votes for the NPP, NDC, or CPP, but that a chief cannot back his royals who are running for office. As translated by Joy News, he said.

When Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the newly-elected National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), called the High Court judge after winning the National Congress on December 17, 2022, the judge made the remark.

Nana Agyemang Badu expressed his pleasure over the fact that the leaders of the two major parties are from the Bono Region while praising Asiedu Nketiah for the victory.

Additionally, Nana Agyemang Badu warned the Electoral Commission to organize the 2024 elections with fairness, firmness, and vigilance.

He said that there is a lot riding on the next elections and that it is crucial for the commission to be perceived as a neutral arbiter.

“I’m appealing to the Electoral Commissioner, there is tension already towards the next elections so they should be diligent in their work and not allow themselves to be compromised. If you get these things right, there will be no issue but no one will accept defeat without fairness.

“In the fourth republic, both parties have ruled four times so the next election will be a decider. It will be the penalty. If the Commissioner does a good job, regardless of the winner, the chairman of the party will be from Bono Region,” he said.
