NLA Boss Sammi Awuku Breaks Ground For Reconstruction Of GHS4m Mampong Coronation Park
Sammy Awuku, Director General of the National Lottery Authority and the Parliamentary Candidate for Akuapim North, has commenced the reconstruction of the Mampong Coronation Park. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on July 25, 2024, marks the beginning of a significant project aimed at revitalizing this historic sporting venue.
The ambitious project, valued at four million Ghana cedis, is set to transform the park into a state-of-the-art facility. The new design includes a FIFA-standard football pitch, measuring 96 by 66 meters, and a seating capacity of 400, complete with VIP sections for dignitaries and traditional leaders. The development also encompasses modern dressing rooms for both home and visiting teams.
One of the notable enhancements will be the installation of four floodlights at each corner of the pitch, enabling the park to host night games. Additionally, the entire area will be secured with panel mesh fencing to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access.
In an interview following the ceremony, Sammy Awuku emphasized that the reconstruction responds to the traditional leaders’ requests for modernized recreational facilities for the Mampong community. He also highlighted the project’s tight schedule, urging the contractors to adhere to the three-month completion timeline.
Historically, Mampong Coronation Park, along with Sunyani Coronation Park, is one of the few football pitches established by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1965. These parks were integral to promoting football in district capitals.
The reconstruction of the Mampong Coronation Park is not just a nod to its rich history but a step towards enhancing local sports infrastructure and fostering community spirit through modernized recreational facilities.
