Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, recently criticized Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, for his remarks about the nation’s founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Mahama expressed that Nkrumah’s ghost should have rebuked Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his perceived disrespect.
Dr. Prempeh, who is the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), faced backlash after making comments that were seen as derogatory towards Kwame Nkrumah. Although Dr. Prempeh later apologized, clarifying that his remarks were taken out of context, Mahama did not hold back in his response.
Mahama emphasized that Ghanaian culture discourages speaking ill of the deceased, especially since they cannot defend themselves. He argued that the comments reflect Dr. Prempeh’s inherent disrespect, noting that in the past, such words might have triggered a response from Nkrumah’s ghost, if not for the apparent “disarming” of ghosts today.
He further criticized what he sees as Dr. Prempeh’s arrogance, drawing attention to similar remarks the NPP running mate has made in the past about other leaders like Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and the late John Evans Atta Mills.
John Dramani Mahama is currently touring the Volta Region as part of his campaign for the 2024 elections. His visit is aimed at promoting his message and that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he seeks to win the presidency again. He will spend six days engaging with the people in the region.
