The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a nationwide protest today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to reject their call for a forensic audit of the voters register.
The protests are occurring across all 16 regions of the country, with demonstrators following approved routes. The nationwide action, first announced by party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah on September 16, stems from the NDC’s concerns over alleged irregularities in the voters register. The party has expressed significant doubts about the integrity of the register, fearing it may compromise the fairness of the upcoming December 7 elections.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections, reiterated the party’s stance in a Facebook post, labeling the register as “unfit for purpose” and calling for a forensic audit or a detailed parliamentary investigation. He described the current voter roll as containing “incurably defective” anomalies that need urgent attention.
The NDC believes that conducting a forensic audit is critical to restoring public trust in the electoral process and ensuring that the upcoming elections are fair and credible.
