The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for the arrest of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, over incendiary remarks made during a campaign event. Dr. Opoku Prempeh, in his speech, accused the NDC of involvement in the deaths of pastors and spiritual leaders during its time in power, as well as the destruction of mosques.
During his address at the rally, NAPO claimed, “The NDC is the only party that kills pastors. They killed two pastors in broad daylight — Prophet Asare and Brother Amoako. They even killed a spiritualist, Nana Drobo, the man behind the HIV drug, and left his body in the bush.” He further added that the NDC also targeted religious institutions, alleging that they demolished mosques, stating, “If you live in a Zongo and vote for the NDC, they will destroy your mosques when they come to power.”
Reacting to these serious accusations, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Nana Akwesi, called for Dr. Prempeh’s arrest. In an interview with Neat FM on September 3, 2024, Akwesi stated that such comments warranted an investigation by national security, given the gravity of the allegations.
“NAPO should be questioned by the national security. Accusing a political party of killing pastors and spiritual leaders is not something that should be ignored,” Akwesi said. He also pointed out that if an NDC member had made similar statements, they would likely have faced legal consequences. “We cannot tolerate such dangerous accusations going unchecked. If this were said by someone from the NDC, they would have been arrested by now,” he added.
Akwesi emphasized the need for peace and cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, warning that the NDC would not sit by while such claims were made without accountability. He urged the authorities to act swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating.
As of now, there has been no official response from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh or the NPP regarding the NDC’s demands. The matter has stirred tensions between the two political parties as they continue to prepare for the 2024 general elections.
