A former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection in the Mahama administration, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has pointed fingers at the Akufo Addo led administration for the lynching of 90-year old Madam Akua Denteh.
According to her, failure on the part of the Akufo Addo led government to continue projects started by the erstwhile Mahama administration on eliminating witch camps and accusation of women as witches led to the old woman’s unfortunate death.
Speaking on Class FM’s State of the Nation Program on Wednesday she said, “we’re talking about the lynching of a 90-year-old woman a few weeks ago; may she rest in perfect peace. Under NDC, under John Dramani Mahama, we started a programme to shut down witch camps and to provide support for women who had been accused of being witches and even to eradicate that customary practice.”
She added, “how do you politicise crime when you are introducing an intervention to address a custom, which adversely violates the rights of women? And because of the neglect of NPP and their failure to continue a well-spelt out programme to eradicate accusation of women as witches, it has led to lynching.”
She blamed the current Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Protection under the leadership of Cynthia Morrison, insisting “they could have gone on with this programme.”
Madam Akua Denteh was on July 23, lynched to death after being accused of witchcraft by some persons in Kafaba.
Police, since the viral video of the incident popped up, have acted swiftly to arrest about seven persons behind it including the sorcerer who professed her a witch.
