Multi-Million Dollar Borteyman Sports Complex Now Used For Church Services

The Borteyman Sports Complex, recently a bustling hub for the 2023 African Games, has seen an unexpected transformation into a place of worship just three months after the event. This repurposing of the facility, managed by the National Sports Authority, has raised eyebrows among sports enthusiasts and the general public alike.

A video circulating on social media, first reported by Ghanafeed, revealed that one of the arenas within the complex has been converted into a church hall. Investigations confirm that the Christ Embassy Church, Legon Central Assembly, has been using the sports complex for their regular church services. This revelation follows a June 4 incident where students from the University of Ghana were transported to the Borteyman Sports Complex under the pretext of a “fun trip,” only to find themselves attending a church service.

The Borteyman Sports Complex is a state-of-the-art facility designed to host a variety of sporting events. It features a 1,000-seater capacity swimming pool with both a 10-lane competition pool and an eight-lane warm-up pool. Additionally, it includes a multipurpose sports hall that can accommodate 1,000 spectators for sports such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.

The complex also boasts a 500-seater temporary dome intended for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, and arm-wrestling. Moreover, it has a five-court tennis complex, including a 1,000-seater centre court, which underscores its versatility and capacity to host major sports events.

The decision to allow the Christ Embassy Church to use the sports complex as a venue for its services has sparked discussions about the intended purpose of such facilities and their management. While some view this as a pragmatic use of space, others argue it detracts from the facility’s original purpose and the investment made to promote sports.

As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the National Sports Authority will address the public’s concerns and balance the multifaceted needs of the community. The unexpected use of the Borteyman Sports Complex as a church venue has certainly opened up a broader dialogue on the utilization of public sports facilities in Ghana.
