Mid-Year Budget Review: Gov’t Promises Doable But What Are the Long-term Consequences? – NDC Quizzes

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has questioned government’s decision to give free water and electricity to Ghanaians amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the NDC, these initiatives maybe plausible but may have dire consequences if measures are not put in place to sustain it.

Speaking on the Happy Morning Show, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and a member of the NDC Inusah Fuseini  said, finance minister in his budget reading failed to indicate the cost in providing these free initiatives.

“The promises of the finance minister are doable but what are the long term consequences? The free water will definitely be treated and those who treat the water will be paid. So what are you doing to capacitate the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for them to produce water for the country? What has the minister said in that regard? How much money have you put aside for free water and free electricity?” he quizzed.

He added, “these things are good but you must know there is no free light. How are you going to pay for them? Are you going to take money from somewhere and pay for them?”

Inusah Fuseini further accused the finance minister of campaign and making manifesto promises with the mid year budget.

He stated, “this Government is bent on putting promises ahead of the reality of the people and that is my worry.”

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta in reading the mid-year budget review last Thursday revealed government will be extending the free water and subsidized light bills initiative for three more months to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19.
