Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond has blamed media houses for deliberately, maliciously and shamelessly twisting his comments on the government’s military deployment to the border towns in Volta to cause him social disaffection.
Mr Hammond in a statement stated emphatically that no where in his 4minutes interview which has since gone viral did he say Ghanaians from the Volta Region were not Ghanaians.
“I am educated, old and mature enough to know the history of Ghana and to understand the debilitating effect of ethnocentricity and bigotry in any community. I am not the one to call fellow citizens from the Volta region, non-Ghanaians,” the statement read.
According to him, he was not even aware of the presence of military in the region.
To him, he only guessed and said if there be any military presence in the Volta region, then it may be due to the pending electoral exercise “to ensure the sanctity of its outcome by preventing non-Ghanaians and those not constitutionally qualified to register and vote from infiltrating through the porous border.”
“I, as an individual and not a member of Government, thought that there had been a registration-related security beef up along our borders for which I responded with a possible reason. It is obvious now from the details emerging that there is no such registration-related security beef up,” he said.
Mr Hammond blamed the opposition National Democratic Congress for claiming he had suggested Voltarians were not Ghanaians.
With the media he said, he had “taken steps to report the media houses associated with this mischief to the National Media Commission for redress.”
