Mankessim Chief Arrested For Murder

In an incident that has stunned the Mankessim community, the acting Gyaasehene, Eric Ato Appiah Mends—also known as Nana Badu I—was remanded in custody following a tragic shooting during the preparatory activities for the Nkusukum Odambea Festival.

The 45-year-old traditional leader faces serious allegations after reportedly shooting 52-year-old Kwesi Mekyeawo on October 25, 2024. The incident allegedly took place during a ceremonial procession that was disrupted by members of a different division. An argument erupted between the groups, which quickly escalated. According to eyewitness accounts, Nana Badu I allegedly drew a firearm in the confrontation and fired, fatally injuring Mekyeawo.

Following the shooting, Nana Badu I voluntarily surrendered at the local police station, where he was subsequently detained. His court appearance saw Prosecutor ASP Daniel Gadzo requesting additional time to further investigate the case, prompting the judge to remand the chief in custody until the next court date, scheduled for November 12.

The tragic event has shaken the community, drawing a mix of shock and condemnation from local leaders and family members. Abuapanyin Solomon Ato Budu-Hegan, the family head, publicly denounced the incident, expressing disappointment and sorrow over the turn of events. Meanwhile, Nana Amoa I, another chief in the region, called on the judiciary to expedite the case while ensuring a just process.

As Mankessim prepares for the upcoming festival, the community remains somber, grappling with the implications of this unexpected tragedy involving one of its prominent leaders.
