A panel of five High Court Judges in Malawi have been honored with Prestigious UK Awards after their work in a recent election petition in that country.
Malawi’s constitutional Court Judges ordered a Re-run of the country’s 2019 elections after they identified widespread irregularities during an election petition hearing.
Chatham House, the UK institution which awarded the Judges, said that their brave and principled conduct is an example for all nations.
The 2019 Malawi Election which was won by the incumbent President Mutharika, was overturned after a panel of 5 judges identified widespread irregularities.
The Court issued an order for fresh elections to be conducted.
The subsequent Re-run was won by the opposition Party in 2020.
Despite high-level bribery attempts and threats, Justice Healey Potani, Justice Ivy Kamanga, Justice Redson Kapindu, Justice Dingiswayo Madise and Justice Michael Tembo – who arrived in court under armed escort and wearing bullet-proof vests – delivered their 500-page ruling which upheld the constitution and defended citizens’ democratic rights in the most difficult circumstances.
