Majority Wins Votes in Parliament to Enable EC to Compile A New Voters’ Register With New Requirements

Ghana’s Parliament has voted to grant a green light to the Electoral Commission’s Constitutional Instrument (C.I. 126) which will enable the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters’ register with new requirements.

106 MPs from the Majority side voted in favour while 92 Minority MPS voted against it–out of the 198 MPs were in Parliament during the vote.

This vote comes after the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu called for a division, which was granted by the Speaker.

The Electoral Commission’s Constitutional Instrument which the EC has defended as necessary to make the Ghanaian electoral register credible has been rejected by the Minority in Parliament and the main opposition party-NDC.
