Former President and leader of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has commended NDC members of Parliament for protecting the sanctity and secrecy of votes which led to the election of the Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for Ghana’s 8th Parliament.
During a brief meeting with the new members of Parliament on Saturday the 9th of January 2020, the former President who is also challenging the 2020 election results at the Supreme Court opined that the chaotic atmosphere which characterized the dissolution of the 7th Parliament and subsequent election of the speaker is a clear manifestation of the violent nature of the ruling NPP.
He however commended the MPs for remaining united and fighting relentlessly for the Party.
In his words, “this is what unity of purpose can do, united we stand, divided we fall, there is no force which can defeat a people who are unified by a single purpose”.
He added that the fight by the NDC MP’s was to protect Ghana’s democracy and not for their selfish individual interests.
Running mate to John Mahama Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang singled out for commendation, female NDC Parliamentarians who she claims fought alongside their male counterparts to safeguard the sanctity of the ballots.
Several unexpected incidents led to chaotic scenes in Parliament during the inauguration of the 8th parliament on Thursday, January 7, 2021.
These include the confrontation between the two caucuses over sitting position, the NDC MPs’ challenge of the manner in which the secret voting process for the Speaker of Parliament election was being done, the invasion of the parliamentary chamber by armed soldiers as well as the snatching of ballot papers by the Tema West Member of Parliament, Carlos Ahenkorah.
