Former President John Dramani Mahama’s office has initiated criminal proceedings against two activists from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of forging and misusing the letterhead of the ex-president. The legal action was taken after lawyers for Mahama filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The accused individuals are identified as Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, an NPP lobbyist, and Ato Kwamena Forson, a Deputy Director of IT at the NPP headquarters. The complaint, submitted in October 2023, alleges that the duo circulated a fake letter on social media, purporting to be from Mahama’s office and containing false information.
The letter, signed by Justice Srem-Sai of Praetorium Solicitors and addressed to CID Director-General DCOP Faustina Andoh-Kwofie, outlined the basis for the criminal complaint. It stated, “Our client has asked us, by way of a petition for the commencement of criminal investigations, to bring the following facts to your attention.” The letter continued to detail how a forged document, bearing Mahama’s office seal and style, was disseminated by the accused individuals.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the letter emphasized, “That the said document was not authored or issued by our client.” Mahama’s legal representatives pointed out that the former president had not authorized the use of his office’s credentials in the circulated document.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Special Aide to Mahama, shared a copy of the petition on social media with a caption underlining the importance of combatting disinformation. “Disinformation is inimical to our democracy. Our laws protect us and our democracy from disinformation,” Mogtari stated. She further explained that Mahama’s team had discovered the false information two months prior and had formally complained to the Ghana Police Service.
“We hope that the police will enforce the law and help protect our democracy,” Mogtari added.
