The newly inaugurated Mahama administration has wasted no time in tackling Ghana’s energy crisis, commonly known as “dumsor.” President John Dramani Mahama has directed his Chief of Staff to convene an emergency meeting with key stakeholders in the energy sector to devise immediate and long-term solutions to stabilize the country’s power supply.

The high-stakes meeting, held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, brought together representatives from critical entities, including GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, BOST, and other power generation companies.

Fuel Shortages Behind the Crisis

The ongoing power outages have been attributed to insufficient fuel stocks for power generation. According to recent data, the situation is dire:

  • AKSA has just five hours of fuel left.
  • KTPP’s reserves will last only 1.5 days.
  • Asogli has completely exhausted its fuel supply.
  • Cenpower, while maintaining reserves projected to last 20.9 days, cannot meet national demand on its own.

Formation of Technical Committee

To address the crisis, Acting Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the formation of a technical committee comprising experts and policymakers, including John Abdulai Jinapor, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. The committee has been tasked with presenting a detailed roadmap to the government by the end of the day.

“This team will outline both immediate interventions and sustainable strategies to resolve the power crisis,” said Mr. Kwakye Ofosu.

Stakeholders’ Response

John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu and a former Deputy Energy Minister, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address the crisis. “We are fully committed to stabilizing the power supply and ensuring that Ghanaians do not endure further disruptions,” he assured.

The meeting represents the administration’s proactive approach to the energy challenges that have plagued Ghana in recent years.

Public Anticipation

The energy crisis, a recurrent issue in Ghana, has disrupted daily life and hampered economic activities, particularly for small businesses reliant on consistent power. Ghanaians are watching closely as the Mahama-led government takes swift action to mitigate the situation.

The administration’s ability to deliver on its promise of effective governance will be tested as it seeks to implement solutions that balance immediate relief with long-term energy security.

President Mahama’s early moves to address critical national challenges signal a hands-on leadership style, setting a decisive tone for his presidency.
