In a recent statement, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding to rig the upcoming 2024 elections. Mahama claims that the governing NPP is conspiring with the EC to manipulate the voter transfer exercise in their favor, aiming to offset NDC gains in key constituencies.
Mahama’s comments followed a controversial decision by the EC to bar political party agents from observing the ongoing voter transfer process. He argues that this move is a deliberate attempt to facilitate gerrymandering, particularly in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, as well as selected areas in Greater Accra and other regions.
“The Electoral Commission’s decision not to allow agents of political parties to observe the ongoing voter transfer exercise points to only one reason—the EC’s avowed determination to aid the ruling NPP in stealing the outcome of the 2024 elections,” Mahama stated.
He further elaborated that the NDC has identified several constituencies where the NPP is allegedly transferring thousands of voters from their strongholds to diminish the NDC’s parliamentary gains. Mahama emphasized that this strategy is intended to bolster the NPP’s parliamentary representation in the hope that it will indirectly benefit their presidential candidate.
Despite these allegations, Mahama expressed confidence that such tactics would ultimately fail. He insisted that the NDC remains vigilant and will continue to monitor the voter transfer process closely.
“Ghanaians have already decided to vote Akufo-Addo and Bawumia out because of the unprecedented hardships they are faced with due to their economic mismanagement and deep-seated corruption,” Mahama asserted. “No amount of collusion between the Electoral Commission and the NPP can rescue the NPP on December 7, 2024.”
Mahama concluded by urging the EC to adhere to its mandate and act impartially, rather than favoring the ruling party. He called on the leadership of the EC to reconsider their decision and allow party agents to be present during the voter transfer exercise to ensure transparency and fairness.
The NPP and the EC have yet to respond to Mahama’s allegations. The political climate in Ghana remains tense as the nation approaches the 2024 elections, with both major parties gearing up for a fiercely contested race.
