The National Peace Council has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider its decision to refrain from signing the peace pact for the upcoming 2024 elections. The Council emphasized the importance of unity and trust among political parties to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Peace Council, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih underscored the need for all political parties to set aside any grievances or suspicions that could jeopardize the electoral process. “Our appeal is that let bygones be bygones… we will need your cooperation. For us to be able to do that, we will need some amount of goodwill and trust,” he stated during a meeting with the NDC on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
The NDC had earlier declared its intention not to sign any peace pact ahead of the elections, arguing that the root causes of electoral violence and disputes need to be addressed before such a pact can be meaningful. The party has presented six key conditions that must be met by the Peace Council before it would consider signing the agreement.
The Council emphasized that it cannot achieve its peacebuilding objectives without the active participation and goodwill of all political parties. The appeal aims to foster an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, ensuring that the 2024 elections are conducted without any disturbances or violence.
The Peace Council now faces the challenge of addressing the NDC’s concerns to bring them back to the table for the peace pact, which has historically been a symbolic commitment among political parties to maintain peace during election periods.
