The Rent Control Department have stated that the work of agents are recognised by the law, however, certain charges they take from tenants concerning rent charges are illegal.
Speaking on Rainbow radio, the Public Relations Officer for the Department, Mr. Emmanuel Kporsu said it is against the law for an agent to take ten percent of a rent amount paid by tenants after assisting them rent.
He said, “the Rent Act recognises rent agents and says if as an agent you help a tenant to acquire a room or an apartment and pays the owner of the facility, the landlord pays you 5% of the rent paid by the tenant. And so, an agent has no legal basis to charge tenants 10% and also charge landlords 10%. It is illegal and punishable by law.”
He noted that, such cases, when brought to their attention will be investigated and then deal with the offender.
