A prominent member of the La Traditional Council, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, who also serves as La Shikitele, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the government’s recent decision to suspend the Council’s activities. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Nii Koofeh questioned the legal basis for the suspension, describing it as unwarranted and unexpected.
The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in consultation with the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, announced the suspension, which took effect from September 26, 2024, citing the need to implement reforms aimed at improving the Council’s operations. During the suspension, government institutions have been directed not to engage with any individuals or groups claiming to represent the La Traditional Council, while paramount stool land issues have also been placed on hold.
Nii Adjei Koofeh IV criticized the decision, stating that the Council was not informed of any allegations justifying the suspension. He particularly took issue with rumors that the Council had been involved in illegal land sales, denying any involvement in such activities.
“The La Traditional Council has always upheld the highest standards in managing its affairs, including land issues. We find this suspension and the allegations deeply troubling, and we demand further clarity from the government regarding this decision,” he said.
The Council’s leadership has vowed to continue seeking legal clarification on the government’s actions, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and lawful operations.
This suspension has left many traditional and local government activities in limbo, as the La Traditional Council plays a pivotal role in land administration and other community functions in the Greater Accra region. The suspension will remain in effect until further notice as the government implements the necessary measures to reform the Council’s operations.
