Kwahumanhene Destooled Following Alleged Misconduct as ADB Board Chair

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, the Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Area, has been destooled following allegations of misconduct in his capacity as the Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB). The destoolment follows growing unrest among residents and youth in the Kwahu Traditional Area.

The tensions culminated in a large-scale protest on Saturday, October 12, when angry youth, dressed in red and black, gathered at the Kwahu palace to present formal petition to Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, the Queen Mother of the Kwahu Traditional Area. The petition, also addressed to the Adontenhene, Akyeamfour Asiedu Agyeman II, demanded action over the chief’s alleged misconduct. However, the Adontenhene was not present during the petition’s presentation.

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, who also served as the Chairman of the ADB Board, was forced to resign from his position at the bank after a businessman accused him of extortion and abuse of office, to the sum of GH₵2 million. The allegations led to a formal petition addressed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which prompted the Bank of Ghana to intervene.

In a letter dated October 10, the Bank of Ghana directed the immediate resignation of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as Board Chair of ADB, citing the severe reputational damage caused by the allegations. “The chief’s continued holding of office as a Director of the ADB has become untenable due to the irreparable damage these events have caused to the image of the bank,” the letter stated.

The destoolment marks a significant event in Kwahu, given Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s prominent role within the traditional area and his leadership at ADB. Local leaders and stakeholders are expected to deliberate on the next steps for the traditional council and the bank as both institutions seek to restore confidence and stability.

Further developments regarding the appointment of a new Paramount Chief and the handling of the case by relevant authorities are expected in the coming days.
