The Kusaug Traditional Council (KTC) has officially lifted its previous suspension on New Patriotic Party (NPP) activities within the Kusaug area. This suspension, originally imposed to prevent political engagement by NPP members and to distance them from the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stemmed from rising tensions tied to the longstanding Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
The initial decision to suspend NPP activities followed allegations that Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi fugitive, had been covertly brought into Bawku, further inflaming regional conflicts. The KTC expressed concerns that the government, particularly Dr. Bawumia—a prominent Mamprusi figure—might be implicated in these developments.
In an October 28 press conference, the Council articulated its conviction that the government had inadequately addressed the ongoing conflict. However, in a recent statement on November 8, the KTC announced it was lifting the suspension despite seeing no significant progress toward apprehending Seidu Abagre. The Council attributed its decision to the cooperation and respect shown by NPP members in Kusaug toward the traditional authority of the Zug-Raan and the Council itself.
The KTC noted that intervention from the Upper East Regional Minister, supported by the President-elect of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs (Chiana Pio), also factored into their decision to allow NPP activities to resume in Kusaug’s six constituencies. The Council acknowledged that NPP parliamentary candidates, many of whom belong to the local communities, had voiced dissatisfaction with the way the NPP government has managed the actions of the settler Mamprusis.
“We recognize that the New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidates are our own who have equally expressed their revulsion at the unsatisfactory manner by which the NPP government has handled the misconduct of the settler Mamprusis,” the Council stated.
As tensions ease with this resolution, the focus now turns to fostering cooperation and peace within the region, with hopes that all parties will respect traditional leadership while working toward sustainable solutions.
