Kufuor Recounts How Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Facilitated HIPC Fund From IMF for Ghana

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has narrated how Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II managed to secure funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help the economy.

Speaking on Opemsuo FM, Mr Kuffour said the Asantehene helped the country to get funds from the IMF after Ghana was declared Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) in the sub -region.

“In 2000 when Ghana was declared HIPC country, my engagement with IMF at last minute was abrogated. After a tip-off, I made a plea to Otumfuo who was in Washington for a different business to talk to his friend who works at IMF. Without hasitation from Otumfuo, he talked to the said friend before Ghana was considered. Without Otumfuo, there was no way Ghana would have gotten any support from IMF”, the ex- President revealed.

He further noted how the Asantehene led peace talks during his era, saying, “same 2000, something bad happened in the country, I don’t want to talk about. It was same Otumfuo who led a peace talk with other eminent Chiefs to ensure peace in the North.”

Former president Kufour praised the Ashanti King for his efforts in helping build Ghana stressing that he had done many things for the country.
