The Minister of Finance Ken-Ofori Atta had replied critics from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who claimed that the mid-year budget which was read in parliament yesterday was in preparation towards the 2020 elections.
The NDC said that there was nothing special about the budget review though the New Patriotic Party thinks otherwise.
John Jinapor, an NDC Member of Parliament said, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta was not forthcoming with the truth on the budget.
“If today your revenues drop, what you do is that you priorities. The Minister is asking for another GHS11 billion. You have a shortfall of GHS13 billion and he is asking for another GHS11 billion. Clearly the Minister’s mind and the whole budget is geared towards elections,” Mr. Jinpor said.
Meanwhile, the NDC also have described the budget as null.
Cassiel Ato Forson, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee in a reaction to the mid-year budget review also had this to say, “I am disappointed as a Ghanaian and I am disappointed in the Akufo-Addo government. I say this because the mid-year review that was presented to us was very empty. There was nothing in it for the ordinary Ghanaian for us to be happy about. Rather, we are receiving some major shocks to the extent that we are hearing for the first time that government has spent or intends to spend GH¢11.1 billion on coronavirus expenditure alone without giving us a breakdown of what the money has been used for”.
Mr. Ken Ofori- Atta has however replied that the NDC are entitled to their opinions on the mid-year budget review, saying that their views do not represent the truth.
