The 16-year-old son of renowned Ghanaian clergyman, Bishop Salifu Amoako, has been sentenced to six months at the Senior Correctional Centre. The sentence follows his guilty plea to eight charges, including two counts of manslaughter, stemming from a car crash that claimed two lives in East Legon.
The case, which drew national attention, involved a high-speed collision that occurred in the East Legon suburb of Accra few months ago. According to prosecutors, the teenager, who was driving without a valid license, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash which claimed the lives of two young girls.
During court proceedings, the teenager expressed remorse for his actions. In a heartfelt statement, he admitted to his role in the accident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. Bishop Salifu Amoako, who was present in court, also apologized on behalf of his family, stating that they would take full responsibility for their son’s actions.
Presiding over the case, the Juvenile Court judge emphasized the need for accountability while taking into consideration the young age of the defendant. The six-month sentence at the correctional facility was deemed appropriate, with the aim of rehabilitation rather than punishment. Additionally, the court directed the teenager to participate in counseling sessions and community service focused on road safety awareness.
The crash has reignited discussions about road safety and parental supervision of young drivers in Ghana. Many have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of road safety violations and the importance of responsible driving. Bishop Salifu Amoako has pledged to support initiatives aimed at educating young people about road safety and the legal implications of driving without proper authorization.
