John Dumelo Faces Backlash For Accusing His Opponent Of Killing Her Husband

John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has come under heavy criticism from netizens following a controversial statement he made about Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency.

During a TV3 community watch program, Dumelo, an actor-turned-politician, expressed his frustration with supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), who had been mocking him over his past involvement in a state car scandal. In his remarks, Dumelo suggested that if his detractors were going to focus on the V8 car issue, then it was fair to insinuate that Lydia Alhassan may have killed her husband to secure her position as MP.

“I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP. That is it because if they want to go that tangent, I can also go the same tangent,” Dumelo said during the broadcast. He added, “If they want to go that tangent, I will go the same tangent because this time around, it is boot for boot.”

The comment quickly sparked outrage on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users condemned Dumelo’s remarks as inappropriate and insensitive. Many pointed out that his accusation was baseless and deeply hurtful, considering the circumstances surrounding the death of Lydia Alhassan’s husband.

One user expressed disappointment, stating, “John Dumelo no de3 he’s so dumb and empty,” while another added, “A woman painfully lost her husband, yet you foolishly sat there and uttered such nonsense against her just because the crowd called you out on the V8 saga? You’re one of my favourites, but I am seriously disappointed in you!”

Others criticized Dumelo’s communication skills, with one comment reading, “Lydia killed her husband to become MP” – John Dumelo. Your communication skills are very poor.” Another user harshly rebuked the politician, saying, “This guy is an uncivilised character. Should we say he (John Dumelo) killed his mother because he wants power? Such an imbecile wants to go to Parliament.”

The backlash continued with another user describing Dumelo’s comments as reckless, “Actor John Dumelo made a reckless statement today that Mama Lydia killed her husband to become MP. He further threatened the constituents who don’t support him. The response he got will shock you. Monkey will go to market and won’t return one day.”

The incident has cast a shadow over Dumelo’s campaign, with many questioning his suitability for parliamentary office after such a contentious statement. The backlash underscores the sensitivity surrounding political rhetoric and the need for responsible communication from public figures, especially during an election season.
