Legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has issued a stern warning to the Mahama-led administration regarding the behavior of certain security personnel, cautioning that their indiscipline could cost the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government its position in power.

In a recent Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor reiterated his earlier concerns, stating, “When the NDC took over power, I warned them to be careful of some elements within our security forces. I will repeat it, their indiscipline will send this government into opposition. Mark my words.” His remarks follow an incident involving military officers assaulting a JoyNews journalist.

Ghana Armed Forces Launches Probe

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated an investigation into the altercation, following a directive from the Presidency. A statement from the Department of Public Relations at GAF Headquarters confirmed that the probe seeks to establish the facts behind what it termed the “inappropriate conduct” of soldiers during an encounter with journalists on Tuesday, July 30, 2025.

Signed by Captain VA Arhin (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General of Public Relations, the release assured the public of a thorough investigation, adding that those found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.

Government Condemns Assault on Journalist and Civilians

The government has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony and the assault on an eyewitness during coverage of a demolition exercise at a warehouse linked to businessman Daniel McKorley (McDan) in Accra.

In a statement issued on July 30, 2025, Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the actions of the security personnel as “utterly unacceptable” and contrary to democratic principles.

“A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” the statement emphasized.

Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom

The government reiterated President Mahama’s “unwavering commitment” to the safety and freedom of journalists, as well as the protection of citizens’ rights. It has directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to expedite investigations and ensure that the officers involved face immediate disciplinary action.

“Appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures must be applied without delay to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

Details of the Incident

The altercation occurred during the demolition of McDan’s warehouse, where military and national security personnel interrupted Carlony’s interview with an eyewitness, demanding he cease reporting. The journalist was subsequently detained alongside McDan’s Group CEO and three others, who were allegedly forced to kneel.

Carlony reported being punched from behind by a military officer and has since undergone medical examinations. The incident has sparked public outrage, with calls for accountability within the security forces to uphold democratic values.

As investigations proceed, the government faces mounting pressure to address misconduct within the security apparatus to prevent further erosion of public trust.
