Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, the former chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed reservations about the delay in implementing the recommendations of the 9 May stadium disaster committee, two decades after the incident.
At least 127 individuals lost their lives in a stampede at the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium (Accra Sports Stadium) when police discharged teargas in an attempt to disperse angry soccer fans during a match between Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.
It was Africa’s worst football tragedy.
Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the 9 May disaster, Nyaho-Tamakloe said the usual funfair of talking about the disaster without walking the talk must cease.
“The commission of enquiry that was put up by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, go and pick the paper and see whether the recommendations they came up with and the sort of monies that was supposed to be given to the children who have lost their parents have been given,” he said.
“Ask whether the football association has pursued that? So, these are the things we have to look at. This sort of fanfair of about talking about issues that have happened 21 years ago when really solutions have not been put together, I think we have to stop it,” Nyaho-Tamakloe added.
