Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has insisted it is possible to pay assembly members monthly allowance despite all the criticism and skepticism.
According to the former president, assembly members can be funded when government cut down on the huge political appointment and ministerial benefits.
Speaking at a meeting with the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOSAG) in Accra on Thursday, August 13, John Mahama noted that assembly members will be trained and deployed as focal points to register births and deaths in their communities which will ensure and up to date National Registry at all times.
He stated, “they must, therefore, be remunerated for providing this service, and government can effectively fund such payments by reducing the huge number of political appointments under this government.”
He reiterated his commitment to the local government process, saying “it is only through decentralisation that we can see true progress in the country.”
