The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has vowed to terminate what he terms wasteful government projects, including the “One Village, One Dam” initiative, should he win the upcoming elections. Mahama’s statement comes amidst ongoing discussions about the country’s economic strategy and fiscal management.
In a recent address, Mahama criticized the current administration for its handling of the economic crisis, asserting that strategic cuts in government expenditure are essential to revitalize the economy. He emphasized the need for reallocation of funds from non-essential projects to more productive sectors that can stimulate economic growth.
“The current economic situation demands strategic decisions, including significant cuts in government expenditure. Unfortunately, the present government has not taken such measures seriously. Instead, they focus primarily on increasing revenue,” Mahama stated. “When given the mandate, I will eliminate wasteful projects like the One Village One Dam initiative and redirect those funds into sectors that will drive economic growth.”
In response, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia defended the government’s economic management, highlighting their efforts to mitigate external challenges and reduce expenditure. Bawumia, who is also vying for the presidency, argued that the administration has demonstrated fiscal prudence despite adverse global conditions.
“Our government has faced significant external challenges, yet we have managed the economy prudently. We have also taken steps to cut expenditure where necessary,” Bawumia asserted.
