I Will Impose ‘Life Sentences’ On Galamseyers If I Become President – Alan Cash

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the Presidential Candidate of the Movement for Change, has reiterated his commitment to addressing illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, by proposing life imprisonment for offenders as a means to protect Ghana’s environment and natural resources. Speaking at an Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) event in Accra on October 1, 2024, Mr. Kyerematen stressed the urgency of imposing tougher penalties to curb the destructive practice.

He argued that the current 10-year sentence for illegal miners is insufficient to deter them from engaging in galamsey. To combat the persistent threat to Ghana’s rivers and land, Kyerematen outlined his proposal for life imprisonment, which he believes would serve as a stronger deterrent.

As part of his broader environmental protection agenda, the Movement for Change leader also promised to introduce advanced technology to help restore polluted rivers and water bodies. This initiative, he said, would complement efforts to reverse the environmental damage caused by illegal mining and ensure the enforcement of sustainable mining practices.

Kyerematen highlighted the long-term benefits of his plan, asserting that stronger measures would safeguard Ghana’s natural resources for future generations. He reassured the public that his administration would prioritize sustainable resource management and balance economic development with environmental protection.

In a bold move, he also proposed a one-year complete ban on all small-scale and community mining, whether legal or illegal, to allow time for cleaning up the nation’s polluted water bodies. The new legislation would impose stringent regulations, including life imprisonment for anyone caught mining in river bodies or forest reserves.

“We need to get to the point where punishments have a real impact. If it’s just a 10-year sentence, the financial gains from galamsey will make it worthwhile for offenders to return after their time in prison and continue the practice,” Kyerematen stated.

He concluded by calling on Ghanaians to support his vision for a cleaner and safer environment, emphasizing that tackling galamsey is crucial for the nation’s sustainable growth and development.
