I Was Wrong, Images Of LGBTQ Persons Kissing At Independence Square Was Not AI Generated

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dafeamekpor acknowledged his mistake, stating, “Buhari, let me admit that upon watching this video you have supplied, I am convinced that the earlier information I received… is inaccurate.” The footage in question shows a South African gay couple, identified as Lue and Rue, engaging in public displays of affection, including holding hands and kissing, while draped in Ghana’s national flag at prominent landmarks such as the Independence Arch and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, has publicly corrected his earlier assertion that viral images of two men kissing at Independence Square in Ghana were artificially generated. The lawmaker, who initially dismissed the photos as AI-generated during a parliamentary session, reversed his stance after a social media user provided video evidence confirming the authenticity of the incident.

The couple later explained that their actions were a form of protest against Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. The legislation, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ advocacy and same-sex relationships, has sparked intense debate in the country, where LGBTQ+ rights remain a contentious issue.

Dafeamekpor, a vocal opponent of LGBTQ+ activism, clarified that his initial denial was based on incorrect information. “The initial advice I got on the photos was wrong… I was and remain part of the strongest voices against these LGBTQ+ activities in our country,” he stated.

The incident has further fueled discussions around Ghana’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights, with growing pressure on lawmakers to pass the controversial bill. Human rights advocates continue to oppose the legislation, warning that it could lead to increased discrimination and persecution of the LGBTQ+ community. Meanwhile, supporters of the bill argue that it upholds Ghanaian cultural and religious values.

As the debate intensifies, Dafeamekpor’s retraction underscores the challenges of misinformation in public discourse, while also highlighting the deep societal divisions over LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana. The government faces mounting scrutiny as it navigates the balance between upholding traditional values and respecting human rights.
