Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former Speaker of Parliament, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the removal of military soldiers assigned to current Speaker Alban Bagbin.
He claims he never received military security while serving as Speaker during his four years in office.
This comes after the removal of all military personnel assigned to Alban Bagbin, a situation that many have deemed concerning.
According to correspondence from Major General NP Andoh, Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, to Speaker Alban Bagbin, the withdrawal was necessary since the officers were previously attached “without proper protocol.”
Following that ruling, there have been accusations that Prof Oquaye benefited from a similar arrangement during his time as Speaker.
Those accusations, however, were labeled as “palpably false” in a statement signed by Prof Oquaye.
“Military protection was never offered to me, and I never asked for it.” Indeed, I had only three police officers accompanying me and providing security at all times. “Anyone who cares about the truth may readily verify this information at the Clerk-to-office Parliament’s at any moment,” he stated.
